I lucked out and found 4/29/72 shn 5250 (and it's a good one) on gdaudcast, but that's it. They can't be the only ones.

... I mean, they very well could be, but that would be tragic, and I want to believe. davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15720062848418335540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-387936856129721233.post-75891629395485132962009-11-11T14:59:20.655-06:002009-11-11T14:59:20.655-06:00Not to be pedantic but the video is actually from ...Not to be pedantic but the video is actually from 17-4-72 also in Tivoli and filmed by Danish televison. It tops all others, including 73 and 77 (though 73 is damn close!) and I will never tire of these shows. there is something timeless and profound about these shows that cuts through to the infinite form consciousness of the universe- the joy of being made manifest as sound. I dunno, is that a little too much praise?IntoAsheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06662483074504668486noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-387936856129721233.post-33939059966394418002009-01-30T14:08:00.000-06:002009-01-30T14:08:00.000-06:00There's something about these Europe 72 Dark Stars...There's something about these Europe 72 Dark Stars... they're not "better" than the summer/fall versions, but I can't think of a better example of the band listening to each other so intently and inventively as the April/May 72 Dark Star improvs (100% subjective of course) -- the Tivoli and London (4/8) ones have some of the most delicate, perfectly constructed music I've ever heard from the band, and the later ones (4/24 and 5/25 spring to mind, but of course there are more) are so amazingly lush and overflowing with riches. I can't get enough of it! And to think that on top of operating at such a peak level, they were also able to play with such power for so long (those 2 hour first sets are a thing to marvel at)... it all boggles the mind. Pity they weren't playing Bird Song with Keith yet; otherwise it might take the prize for best tour ever :)

Thanks for another fine write-up, noah. I never knew about this aud and am getting a kick out of hearing it.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11628132999021385676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-387936856129721233.post-3308507181060184482009-01-25T19:52:00.000-06:002009-01-25T19:52:00.000-06:00Thanks for reviewing Europe '72 show -- I love 'em...Thanks for reviewing Europe '72 show -- I love 'em. A highlight of them is hearing both Pigpen and Keith Godchaux on keyboards. Maybe Pig got inspired by Keith's honkytonk energy and technical skill, or maybe it was being in Europe, or something else. Whatever is was, Pig's keyboards are more present and musically involved than anytime since '70 or even '68.

And Pig just naturally slipped into the right sound for the new lineup. His sound is thin, whistling, atmospheric -- a background wash that still lends a great rhythm to the proceedings. While Keith is at his full-bore honky tonk-inflected best. Keith was so talented in music theory terms, and the band was really relying on him during these shows as a grounding influence ... and when the train threatened to careen off the tracks, to deftly sound a touchstone to steer it back on course.

The soundboard mixes are great too. The best ones have a vast amount of space and air between the players -- there's a lot happening and there's plenty of room to hear it all.

Looking forward to more Europe '72!Pebble Texturehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00535414719494851784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-387936856129721233.post-13540614706602473302009-01-25T18:16:00.000-06:002009-01-25T18:16:00.000-06:00thanx for this superb review. europe 72 has probab...thanx for this superb review. europe 72 has probably always been my fave GD.
